Symbolic projects

In Zgorzelec, among the four main projects supported by EU subsidies, not one is truly cross-border in nature. The renovation and restructuring project for the town centre receives financial support from the ERDF. The renovation of the stadium and the water supply network are funded by Interreg. In most cases, it is very difficult for the Polish municipality to find the 25% of local financing. The municipal budget is primarily dedicated to social assistance, and not enough money is left for investing in Interreg projects.

Development of the old town in Zgorzelec

This project came into being through a European competition aimed at young architects from all over Europe.  The funding was provided by the two municipalities and the ERDF.

Joint bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2010

The two towns jointly entered the competition to become European Capital of Culture in 2010. They established two information centres on the subject. Although their bid was unsuccessful, a number of cultural events were organised and efforts were made towards the mutualisation of the towns’ tourism, culture and education offering.

Cross-border fire brigade

The two towns benefited from an Interreg IIIA project for the establishment of a quick response service for fighting fires on either side of the border. Collaboration between the two Polish and German fire brigades was required. They conduct exercises in common, communicate in both languages and have agreed on ways to adapt their safety standards.
