Frankfurt (Oder)–Słubice
Overview
Some examples of projects
Beginning in the 2000s, a number of projects between the two towns have been undertaken, in various fields:
Transport
In December 2012, a cross-border bus route was opened on Heroes’ Square (Plac Bohaterów) in Słubice. In thirty to sixty minutes, over a distance of around 5 kilometres, it links the Frankfurt train station to the two town centres, the two universities, and the shopping centre in Słubice. The key to the project: for € 1.40, the bus ticket is valid on the entire urban transport network of Frankfurt (Oder), and a passenger coming from Berlin to Frankfurt with a train ticket can take the bus to Słubice without the need to pay an additional fare. This project was financed by the “Poland (Województwo Lubuskie) – Brandenburg” 2007-2013 Interreg cooperation programme.
Education
Different levels of education have been the object of cross-border projects. For children, a bilingual European nursery school “Euro Kita” was created in Frankfurt (Oder) in 2000. With regard to secondary education, a polish branch has been opened in the “Karl-Liebknecht-Gymnasium” in Frankfurt (Oder). Lastly, in higher education, the European University Viadrina was created in 1991 in collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan (Poland). All of these different projects were financed with EU funds from the Interreg IIIA programmes.
Urban planning
Concerning urban planning, the principal achievement is the transformation of an island on the Oder River into a park with a cross-border dimension (signs in both languages, cross-border events). This project was financed by the Interreg IIIA and PHARE programmes.
